AS ABOVE, SO BELOW

THE BALLAD OF RADIANT PHAEDRUS

The past and the future are swirling around in my head

If belief is emotion and trust is a choice were all dead

I'm not sure how we'll fight world war three miss president

But the fourth will be with sticks and stones if we're not blown to bits

I can't recall what the child astrophysicist said

But I've read the books and the papers and the internet

More human consciousness than one man should try to collect

For progress and freedom too much beautiful blood has been bled

Harry Harlow that fucker put me and my dog in a cage

He said that you must die alone if you want to be great

There's no amount of genius that I wouldn't trade

I think truth might be different than knowledge I won't isolate

I fell asleep standing up twice already today

Dreamt that my joseph came home with a smile on his face

Both love and hatred take seats at the table and say

"Bring us your wine and your bread were not going away"

Edward and I dropped some acid and swam up the stairs

I watched the sun split the ocean and I didn't care

Who all was watching me stumble I met myself there

And its people with unopened minds who are truly impaired

Buddha weeps under a willow and pulls out his hair

"Smoke what grows next to you; things you enjoy always share"

They paid me to burn down his village and poison the air

Son there's no room for your dreams in the land of despair

Naked we came and so naked we climb into beds

With a man or a woman, we all must bear our own regrets

I found a beauty I don't want to leave or possess

Tonight I'll just hold her and let radiant phaedrus rest

If women are unequal objects built only for sex

Who cares if the baby is starving please cover your breasts

Don said he's famous enough to reach under her dress

Decency died on the cross next to Jesus I guess

Give me a second the cold front came quickly this year

You aren't cursed you're careless with the folks that you claim to hold dear

Speak truths to strangers but treat all your friends insincere

Roll down the road and become what your family fears

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW

The college will teach you to stay where you’re sitting

The bar’s gonna teach you how not to treat women

The church is the last place I’d go get forgiven

All the fun things in life are forbidden

Rich blonde girls drink lattes and take trips to countries

For photos with orphans to show everybody

You don’t need salvation if you’ve got enough money

So I’ll start saving my pennies honey

Now you know

You don’t have to think everything that you’re told

As above, So Below

The liquor’s no good for the ease of your mind

But the good stuff has been outlawed since ‘75

Let’s meet north of Atlanta sometime later tonight

C’mon baby let’s go get high

The mushrooms could help cure your brain of depression

One less corrupt doctor who lives in a mansion

Red blooded Jesus on the cross for expansion

Of blue collar, white man’s oppression

Now you know

You don’t have to think everything that you’re told

As above, So Below

Can’t talk to your dad about your orientation

The porno’s no place for sex education

Then you can’t talk to your wife about masturbation

So you take nice and long vacations

My black friend got shot for running a stop sign

When he reached to his insurance the cop killed him outright

This clown we elected couldn’t call it a crime

It should make every decent man cry

Now you know

You don’t have to think everything that you’re told

As above, So Below

THE OASIS

I’ve been kind and I’ve been hateful

I’ve been thanked and I’ve been ungrateful

Been given more than I am able

To handle on my own

I’ve got cash but screwed my credit

A penny saved can’t be spent in heaven

Life your life cause you’ll regret it

Rich and all alone

All alone, All alone

I’ve been cruel and I’ve been gentle

Done the drugs and I’ve been judgemental

The good lord made me temperamental

But with a heart of stone

My brand new car’s got a failing engine

The warranty’s up son no extension

But red tape is a dead man’s religion

We all end up alone

All alone, All alone

Fiber-optic veins bleed across the land

Long distance lover with an empty hand
I’m a-doing’ about the best that an honest man can

With you only on the phone

But babe I wanna see you on a regular basis

I know it sounds crazy, goodness gracious

Why don’t you come down to the Oasis

We’ll never be alone

All alone, All Alone

HOME OF THE ESTRANGED

Oh give me a home where we aren’t so alone

Where the black and the white children play

Where seldom is heard an offhand racial slur

And my muslim sisters feel safe

Home of the estranged
Where the white and the black children play

Some peace is preferred let the county lines blur

And the preachers hold hands with the gays

Corporate motives are pure, politicians stay free

Of corruption and work to better our lives

Liberals begging for change politely from the stage

The vice president nods and he smiles

The natives of our land we so brutally banned

From the beauty they were born into first

It’s been two hundred years since that damn trail of tears

Yet we still hate them for loving the earth

Home of the estranged

Human life is not a resource to trade

It is not so absurd to hear out the perturbed

We all see the same things different ways

How often at night stumbling bodega bright

Neon lights burn like synthetic stars

Bums ponder below spare a quarter or so

Does their wisdom exceed that of ours

You pick a blue lotus flower from this dear land of ours

If it helps you start to hear people cry

On a child to anoint or you could lace it in your joint

I wish everyone felt just as high

ANTHEM

Take all of your masts

For the world as we know

Is as dark as the night

Of the black-hearted bleeding

You can cut them in half

For no flag should be flown

At the loftiest height

While so many are weeping

If we laid down our guns

Loss of freedom for love

Could a garden still grow

In the singe-cornered sun

Oh say did the newscaster

Finally pray

For a land truly free

Or some truth to convey

THE PROGRESS OF MAN

There used to be a fruit stand here

Some sixty-five odd years ago

Now they sell shiny cars to hipsters

Who can’t afford them elsewhere

I grew up down the street

In a dimly lit apartment

Shaped plastic cups in factories

That will long outlive my brothers

The progress of man leaves good men in its wake

The ship that holds our future departed yesterday

We burned all of earth’s motor fuel digging our own graves

Pour one out for the working class, America’s modern day slaves

My better years blew by

While serving in the military

Why is it our highest honor is

Slaughtering each other’s families

When I go sailing I pretend

I’m walking on the water

Jesus may forgive us mama

I can’t forgive myself

The progress of man leaves good men in its wake

The ship that holds our future departed yesterday

We burned all of earth’s motor fuel digging our own graves

Pour one out for the working class, America’s modern day slaves

I used to watch the yankees play

With my father on the television

My own children find life boring

Unless filtered through computers

I guess it’s not their fault

They ate what they were spoon fed

The money we made advertising

was blown on their prescriptions

The progress of man leaves good men in its wake

The ship that holds our future departed yesterday

We burned all of earth’s motor fuel digging our own graves

Pour one out for the working class, America’s modern day slaves

EASTER SUNDAY

I grew a garden, planted petunias

I only tend to what’s my own

But all the corn that I saved to feed my family

Was burned up heating soldier’s homes

The other day I went and paid my taxes

That we might build some better roads

The eagle smiled slyly counting up my quarters

Bought some expensive red white and blue clothes

Simon Peter and John went fishing

Out to the ocean to escape their nagging wives

If I have one more hook that comes up empty

I’m gonna go get drunk with Judas tonight

Easter Sunday those choirs singing

Jesus stands there idly by

Was it for a pastel dress and chocolate candy

That I was fucking crucified

When I was younger I once loved a woman

Not unlike children love their gods

It was irreverent to pick a pale white clover

For sex we’ll kill whatever we want

On the computer I saw her topless
I felt more lonesome jacking off

But if I don’t say something vulgar in my lyrics

No one’s gonna listen to my songs

MODERN EXCHANGE

As my voice makes its way through your headphones

And settles somewhere in your brain

Is our consciousness interconnected

Are we bleeding out similar veins

Whether I sing of grief or of freedom

Does it just sound like more of the same
Can you cryptically cope with the sadness

As if you’d even want it to change

There’s a rotating door of women

Who will love you and keep you safe

But be it a building or bullet

There’s only one way off the stage

Give us brevity instead of boredom

Give us black and white flags to wave

Give us internet instead of epics

There’s no time in the digital age

There’s no love in a modern exchange

There’s a sea turning under her eyelids

No true poet would try to explain

In order to write down the essence

The person is always erased

God is so cruel in my dreaming

For in the morning when I wake

I’ve only a memory to cling to

Of sharing her smile and name

And when I lose my grip on the moment

Feeling reality fade

I’ll climb up the walls of my bedroom

To her picture eternally taped

Give us loving instead of a lotus

Give us colorful flags to wave

Give us intimacy in the narrative

Take me out of the digital age

No computer could take her place

ASHAMED

Nashville preacher takes the pulpit

With a fire in his eye

Talks redemption, thanking Jesus

For sheep and holy life

But back in college

Cracking cold ones

Hanging with the guys

“Y’all should have seen this chick

I fucked the other night”

There’s religions, politicians

A million ways to hide

We nurture cruel men’s painted egos

Piss on women’s pride

Boys will just be boys I guess

There’s no chance to set things right

It’s been going down this way

For all recorded time

She says baby it happened to me too

What the hell was I supposed to do

When he climbed in through my window

I called out, no one came

The odds were stacked against me 1 in 5 women get raped

I wonder what percentage are then made to feel ashamed

Radiant woman, sees forgiveness

Despite all that’s been done

Won’t be silenced, shares her story

Begins to overcome

More enlightened, more aware

Of how pain gives birth to love

Dreams that someday we’ll be married

A daughter and a son

To be honest, that thought kills me

Are we drifting further from

A world that’s safe and suitable

For a child to grow up

Our boy becomes a man someday

Gets shipped off with a gun

Teach Rosanna, pure and lovely

Early how to run

Tell Rosanna, falls of tears

What happened to her mom

She says baby it happened to me too

What the hell was I supposed to do

When he climbed in through my window

I called out, no one came

The odds were stacked against me 1 in 5 women get raped

I wonder what percentage are then made to feel ashamed

THE SOUTH WILL SOON RISE

Been driving down I95

Seen Christ riding tanks on the signs

A holy dog tog, confederate flag

Singing the south will soon rise

Slim boys in the field playing ball

Keep lifting son soon you’ll be tall

Your daddy is proud, when your skull hits the ground

Cause the brain damage broadens your jaw

That’s the most beautiful girl that I’ve seen

With her face on my morning TV

She’ll tighten her dress, to push up her breasts

And the forecast today is obscene

All these pills that my doctor prescribed

I’d honestly rather get high

The bugs in my brain, don’t seem so insane

When the pot glazes over my eyes

Take a photograph of the full moon

But my camera can’t quite get the zoom

Put the phone away, kiss her on the face

Cause the whole world will unravel soon

WAVES (THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO KNEEL AND KISS THE GROUND)

Waves always seem to break

Further down the beach

In someone else’s sea

Grace you can not escape

Pulls from underneath

Silence in the deep

God always seems to talk
To everyone but me

When I’m here listening

Oh I thought the battle had been fought

True death with dignity

Is living life in peace

Death greets you like a friend

Strolling by the lake

Time is all she takes

In the end, love exists again

In it’s perfect state

Everyone’s the same

FISHING FEMINIST

I’m a feminist, but I want to go fishing

Cause I get pissed, when I ponder the world that we live in

Donald Trump exists, take a look at the power we’d give him

While we dare dismiss, the voices of millions of women

And I thought I cracked the code

Slurred something about communication

Laughably white male of me

To never stop and listen

See through my projections

Put to death my ego

Kiss me with ten-thousand years of patience in your mouth

The time to set things right is running out

How can I resist, centuries of selfish religion

Does a shaking fist, even bother a cruel politician

There’s a great abyss, that we call the human condition

It’s a bent back wrist, harming ourselves is one of our oldest traditions

And I thought I cracked the code

Slurred something about communication

Laughably white male of me

To never stop and listen

See through my projections

Put to death my ego

Kiss me with ten-thousand years of patience in your mouth

The time to set things right is running out

I’m a feminist, but i want to go fishing
