February 25-March 7 + Pacific North West // Joseph

Bainbridge Island - Bellingham - Bend - Eugene - Seattle - Vancouver - Portland - Spokane

I was called about opening this tour, a few weeks after my cousin Joseph passed away. I don't know what I believe about coincidence, or the after life, or timing, or much of anything to be honest, but I knew I needed to go.  Losing him has cost me so much, there is so little now that I care to accomplish. This week, with these people, was a spark of light in deep darkness. I spent my time mostly reading books in the van, getting to know the girls/band, and playing shows for the lovely people of the Pacific Northwest. Here are some photos and some thoughts:

Day one starts with a ferry ride to a small show on Bainbridge Island. I'm shy, and on some pretty intense (medical) drugs at this point, but can already tell these people are significant to me. Side note, didn't see any whales on the way over and was deeply bummed.

Josh plays bass for Joseph, guitar for a band called The Oh Hello's, has the greatest instrumental music recommendations, and I may or may not have said that I have a crush on him on stage at one point.  A self-proclaimed "nerd", but one of the most fascinating people I've had the privilege to meet.

Chris Schepman & Caleb Ingersoll.  The cream of the crop. The loveliest men to come out of Spokane, Washington. I met Chris on the biggest day of his life (he proposed to Natalie), and I respect the hell out of him.  I love you, you mother fucker. Caleb owns my favorite venue I've played (The Bartlett in Spokane). Playing there felt like coming home. The crowd felt like family. The humming was a momentary heaven.

Another of Josh. We would sing on the same mic for the encore, but mostly just talk and giggle.  I feel like it probably made people uncomfortable but I'm not that bothered by it. By the look of that smile he wasn't either. <3

Al. I licked some popcorn off her hand once and I don't think she will ever forgive me for it.

My favorite thing about the world is probably dogs. My second favorite is how it can be so small sometimes. I got to spend two days with Sam Pinkerton and her hunk Canadian prince (picture coming in a second).  She is like a sister to me, and we celebrated her birthday by eating Poutine.

We watched as the seasons came and passed. Autumn, Winter, and Spring - still the drought outlasted us. Tell me it was a good start, I'm still a good heart, Though I couldn't grow us a flower.                                                                                                     I can't make the rain fall, or the trees tall                                                                                Anymore than what's yours could be ours... You're not ours. "Tell Me There's A Garden" Joseph

Joseph, but also this is the only picture I have of Dana. She's in the corner and shreds the electric guitar.

Ended every night singing "Burn up the despair that's been sinking me" and I might have needed that more than anyone attending.
